Janet awarded BEM in Queen's Birthday Honours List

(June 17, 2013)

Janet Prescott has been awarded the Order of the British Empire, British Empire Medal, in the Queens Birthday Honours List 2013.

Mrs Janet Bellamy- JANET PRESCOTT.  Honorary secretary and mill manager, Moulton Windmill Project Ltd. For services to conservation in Lincolnshire.

Janet has been involved with Moulton Windmill Project from the first public meeting and has been instrumental in raising over 1.7million to see the Mill restored to full wind power.

Her husband Paul Bellamy is a duty manager and Miller with the project.

“ I never expected that 14 years ago when this project started that I would be sat here talking about receiving this fantastic award. We have over 30 volunteers at Moulton Mill, all committed people who are very different but they share a common goal, to ensure that the Mill stays alive for generations to come. There are many amazing people that work on this project and this award could have gone to any one of them, I just feel privileged that they chose me.”

The timing of the award could not have been better , coming only a week after Janet celebrated her 46th birthday.

Moulton Windmill was listed in 1967 , the same year that Janet was born, and is an important landmark in the fens. It featured on the English Heritage at risk register, and was removed from that register in 2005 after the first phase of restoration was completed.

Moulton Windmill Project has successfully restored the Mill to full wind power, a journey that has taken 14 years to complete.

The 100’ ten-storey tower mill is the tallest working windmill in the country and production of wholemeal flour began in April of this year .

14 years ago I didn’t know what to expect , didn’t have a clue where the project would take us, just that it was worth a go. Everyone has an opportunity to be a part of something like Moulton, we are looking for volunteers now,  so why not try your hand at guiding or serving in the shop or even milling.

You can be as involved as you want to be there is no pressure , its on your terms - volunteering gives you so much more back than you could ever expect, you’re part of a community that supports and cares for each other, and how many people have that in today’s world.’ -Janet Prescott
